Author's note: The day after Columbia was lost I began to search through the photo gallery at NASA's Human Spaceflight web site to find photos to use to add the STS-107 astronauts to this web site. I have always tried to use both an official photo and a casual photo on each page. While searching I was having a difficult time finding a casual photo of any one astronaut. Instead, many photos taken during training and the mission showed two or more astronauts, sometimes posing. At the time I thought this was a bit out of the ordinary. As I learned more about this crew, I saw that they were a particularly close-knit group. People magazine wrote about an endurance training mission in Wyoming, where several shuttle crews have gone. They walked six mile hikes while wearing 65 pound (29.5 kilogram) backpacks. They also climbed Wind River Peak. Upon reaching the 13,192 foot (4,021 meter) peak Rick Husband began to sing "Amazing Grace." One by one, the rest of the crew joined in. One of the NASA personnel on this training mission commented that this was the closest crew he had seen. Because of this, I chose to add this page. It shows some pictures of the crew in training, some they took of themselves during the mission, some taken of the view, and one political cartoon I found appropriate.
