Lt. Col. Georgi Timofeyevich Dobrovolsky (Soviet Air Force)

Born: 1 June 1928 in Odessa, USSR.

Education: Air Force School, Air Force Academy.

Marital Status: Married.

Children: Two.

Experience: Georgi Dobrovolsky was selected on 10 January 1963 as a military pilot cosmonaut.  In 1967 he joined the Lunar Training Group.  He later served as backup commander of Soyuz 10.

On 6 June 1971 he as launched as commander of Soyuz 11 along with crewmates Vladislav Volkov (flight engineer) and Viktor Patsayev (research engineer).  They became the first crew of the world's first space station, Salyut 1.  After a 23 day mission the crew was killed during preparations for re-entry.
