Mr. Vladislav Nikolayevich Volkov

Born: 23 November 1935 in Moscow, USSR.

Education: Aircraft designer, Moscow Aviation Institute.

Marital Status: Married.

Children: One.

Experience: Vladislav Volkov was selected on 23 May 1966 as a civilian engineer cosmonaut.  From 12 October - 17 October 1969 he served as flight engineer of Soyuz 7.   This was the second of three Soyuz launches in three days.  It is believed that Soyuz 7 and Soyuz 8 were supposed to have docked, but this did not occur.  Soyuz 7 lasted 4 days, 22 hours, and 41 minutes.  Volkov later served as backup flight engineer for Soyuz 10.

On 6 June 1971 he as launched as flight engineer of Soyuz 11 along with crewmates Georgi Dobrovolsky (commander) and Viktor Patsayev (research engineer).  They became the first crew of the world's first space station, Salyut 1.  After a 23 day mission the crew was killed during preparations for re-entry.
